For example, when running Xslimmer on Google Earth 4, it shrinks the size from 101MB to 52.8MB, which is a 47% reduction.
As the developer states, the driving goal of Xslimmer is to achieve size reduction without compromising functionality. As of version 1.2, the option to strip applications from unwanted language files and localizations is added. Version 1.2.7 improves Leopard support by automatically excluding Time Machine paths from the analysis process.
Additional features for safe use include a "blacklist" and a custom folder list (which is by default populated with key system locations). This prevents problems with applications (or the system itself) that will no longer work after size reduction.
With the "App Finder Genie", a user can list all size reducible applications on the hard disk and choose to slim them and save a considerable amount of hard disk space.
Description
Xslimmer 1.6.4 is a maintenance release that incorporates several improvements in the User Interface. It also fixes a bug that affected applications with Unicode (not ASCII) characters in their names, if those apps required admin authorization to be slimmed.
Bug fixes
- Applications with Unicode characters in their names that belong to other users can now be properly slimmed. This problem was introduced in Xslimmer 1.6.2, and made it impossible to slim apps that contained non-ASCII characters in their names, if those apps required admin privileges to be slimmed. Xslimmer would stop the slim process when dealing with one of those apps, and would not indicate that an error had occurred. This has now been fixed so those apps can be slimmed again.
- Error handling. In some situations, Xslimmer would fail to report a problem when trying to slim one app. This has been fixed: slim failures are now properly reported so that the user knows what's going on.
Feature improvements
- Xslimmer will no longer regain focus after the Genie analysis is complete. It will let you know the operation is complete using other mechanisms, including Growl, sound and dock icon bouncing, but will not disrupt your work.
- Multiple apps can now be selected in the main list. This will allow you to use the Genie, then quickly remove apps you don't want to slim.
- When adding an application to the list, the previously used location will be remembered.
- Some texts have been rewritten for improved clarity.
